Calculate available wall space for art

Too much wall art can overwhelm a space, and too little seems odd. When choosing wall art for living spaces that you are decorating, their sizes influence your experience there. Interior designers recommend wall art sizes that cover 60-75% of available wall space. Here’s how you can calculate the ranges of available wall space for your interiors…

Measure

First, measure the width and height of your wall.

E.g. 300cm wide x 200cm high

Calculate lower ranges

This represents the minimal space that you should cover on a wall, given its dimensions. Calculate the lower ranges by multiplying each measurement by 0.6.

Example:

  • Lower End Width: 300cm x 0.6 = 180cm
  • Lower End Height: 200cm x 0.6 = 120cm

Calculate higher ranges

This represents the maximum space that you should cover on a wall, given its dimensions. Calculate the higher ranges by multiplying each measurement by 0.75.

Example:

  • Higher End Width: 300cm x 0.75 = 225cm
  • Higher End Height: 200cm x 0.75 = 150cm

Available Wall Coverage

In the example above:

  • The smallest area to cover with wall art is 180cm (width) x 120cm (height)
  • The largest area you should cover is 225cm (width) x 150cm (height)
  • The ideal width range is between 180cm and 225cm
  • The ideal height range is between 120cm and 225cm

Using these calculations helps you to create a visually appealing space while leaving enough room for other design elements or movement.
